Hola,
“Por” has a few different uses and when you translate it to English it can be “by” or “for” as you have said, but also sometimes “in” (por la mañana – in the morning) or “at” (por la noche – at night). Most commonly it is “for”.

Yes, you can say “¿cuál es su nombre?”, this is a formal way to ask someone’s name. You can also say “¿cómo se llama?”.
To be less formal you could say “¿cuál es tu nombre?” or “¿cómo te llamas?”.
Saludos,
Laura.

It is kind of you to take the time to teach this way. Thank you. I was told to ask someone’s name by saying, “Cual es su nombre?” by a Mexican friend. Is that okay? Also, I gather there is numerous differences between say Puerto Rican Spanish and that spoken in Mexico.

Hola,
No, it is definitely not considered bad if you are unable to pronounce some words perfectly. The r can be tricky, also maybe the g and the t. It is obviously better if you can master everything, but don’t worry, people will just be extremely happy to hear you speaking their language. In saying this though, I am sure your pronunciation will improve a lot with more practice, so keep up the studying and enjoy!

Is it considered bad if you can’t pronounce the words with the same accent as someone who speaks Spanish as their native language? Like with the rolling of r’s and such. I’ve been trying to brush up on my Spanish since I’ve taken it in high school and I was curious about that since I have a difficult time pronouncing the words as native speakers do.
