take a course at your local community college and use the tutors and spend lots of time in the lab. I think that is the cheapest and most effective way to learn. Perhaps looking on amazon and buying previously used books and tapes?

you can just learn it online by going on google and searching for online books and all…

Download Rossetta Stone it absolutely amazing.
I used it to learn Japanese and it worked way better than any other service including private lessons.
You can download it for free via torrent, or you can buy it its roughly $400. Definately worth it.
Also another thing you can do to help is watching spanish tv shows with english subtitles, it isn't very effective but it helps.

Personal experience
There is a series of learn-by-yourself CDs and books for different languages… wait, just hear me out… that teach you the basics of communication of a language in 3 months and if you're any good, by the end of those three months you'll have learned enough of the language to actually go and talk to people there in mediocrity. The title of a learning-box (1 book + 1 CD) is "<Language(Fr, Spa, Jp, Eng, Ger…)> in three months" and can be found at mostly any library without purchase (though it depends on the system you're in). Anyway, i can reccomend that thing. It takes you 10 minutes of reading/listening twice per day for 3 months, I'd reccomend in the morning and again in the evening and you can regulate that to make it go faster.
Other than that, going t oa foreign country with no lingual basis at all is suicide. It is a good way of quickly learning a language but you at least need to fall into their line of thinking or learn some basic rules, which will make the rest go much faster.

immerse yourself with spanish speakers, and if needed, pretend to be from a non-english speaking country =) (for me that's easier because my dad is french)

First things you should know
I'm a Native Spanish Speaker, the best recommendations are:
Don't try to use Vowels "A", "E" "I", "O" "U" like English.
These are pure vowels,
A Sounds like > A/ (Short and without the sound #Ei#, only open your mouth and blow it)
It is very common to recognize the English accent when Speaking Spanish.
R is a big deal for Americans.
R is Short and Strong!!
No RRRRrrrrrrr, In English R is pronounced opening your mouth the closing it slowly, In Spanisk never close your mouth.
Have the same fluency RRRRRR.
O is another big deal for English Speakers
The same recommendation like previous one. (R)
O is only "OOO" , dont say "OOuuu"
For example: Pescado (Cut the O sound), don't say Pescadouuu.
Yor accent depends on Vowels pronunciation.
About consonants
H for us does not have any sound.
If we see Hamburguer, a native spanisk speaker would say
Amburger.
(not like JJJJaaamburguer )
V sounds like B.
In the same way
V does not sound like ffffffVViiii, it sound like Bi
