I am going on a solo backpacking trip to South America in January and I want to learn as much Spanish as possible before I go. What are some cheap/effective ways to do this?

How cheap?
I would suggest Berlitz (it’s cheaper than Rosetta Stone). Or try finding a cheap tutor and some Spanish books.
There are a bunch of free Spanish learning websites out there too. I suggest http://www.studyspanish.com

Use http://www.livemocha.com. It’s free and really great for learning.
Check it out.

If you want to learn by book… Berlitz.
But if you really want to learn, go to a location frequented by people that only speak Spanish, and engage in conversation. You will learn and gain confidence, and they will gain a friend.

Well, first I want to congragulate you on taking the trip down to South America. I was just there on vacation for a week.
For my spanish, I used a guide i got online, and it says it can teach you Spanish in 12 days, and I didn’t believe it, but it did. It was amazing. After a few week I felt as if I knew Spanish completely. I have been using this for other language and it been great.
Anyway, here’s the link for it,

Why not start in Guatemala and study spanish at the begining of your trip? If you google it, you’ll see Antigua, Guatemala as one of the highest rated cities in CA to study. Costs about $120 a week with meals and homestay. There are also other areas around Lake Atitlan where it costs $90 a week for 4 hours a day of private instruction.
You won’t learn it as well in the US as you would in full immersion down there.
My 2 cents.
