5 weeks? I don't think so. You better carry a spanish software in your laptop to constantly practice. Or even on your mp3 player. Try to search on http://www.spanishsoftwarereviews.org and see what it says there.

Good luck, I hope this helps.
Take care on your trip.
References :
http://www.spanishsoftwarereviews.org

Unless you're a genius with languages, you wont be fluent after 5 weeks of intensive language classes...

However, French and Spanish have a lot in common so since your first language is French and you already know the basics of Spanish you could reach an intermediate conversational level of Spanish after the 5 week intensive course in Chile.

Suerte!
References :
You would'nt be fluent in Spanish after 5 weeks, but you will have a good start on the language and have people to practice with after you leave, which is important. To be fluent, it would probably take 6 months to a year in a Spanish speaking country, depending on your level of fluency when you go.
good luck
References :
I've been taking classes for a while and have looked into spending a summer in central or South America to get better at Spanish.

No. You will not be fluent in Spanish, but you will be well on your way!

It has taken you a life time to know English.

It takes a lot longer than 5 weeks to master another language.

It will be a benefit to stay with the host family.

Have fun! Hope your host family is nice!
References :
Spanish teacher, former study abroad student
