Is it stupid to try to learn Spanish and Catalan at the same time?

I’m conversant in Spanish, but I study it actively. Would it be stupid to learn Catalan on top of this? I’ve recently fallen in love with Catalan, and I really want to study it.
Andrew C- Independently and with Catalan friends

Its a great language to learn!!! Especially if you ever plan to live/work/study in Catalonia, Valencia or the Balearic islands where Catalan is the first language.

I’m in the same position as you. I speak Castilian already and would love to learn Catalan. But there are only like 10 universities in the US that offer any courses at all.

Where were you planning on studying it?

How easy would it be for me to learn Spanish if I already know French and some Italian?

My mother tongue is English but I’ve lived in Montreal for almost my whole life until I moved to USA a few years ago so my French is pretty good and my family is Italian so although I don’t speak it, the older people in my family speak only Italian to me so I understand it.

That being said, how easy would it be for me to learn Spanish fluently? I already understand a few things in Spanish so that must be a good sign right?

I have been told that once you learn a second language, it becomes easier to learn additional languages since you already are familiar with the structure of learning language.

That being said, I found that after learning Spanish I picked up Portuguese relatively quickly.

French and English are relatively similar languages in certain respects, and because French, Italian, Spanish, as well as Portuguese and Romanian are all romance languages they share a similar base (Latin) and because of this share similarities in grammar. Knowing a word in one language will help you identify words in the other in some cases, for example luna = moon in spanish, lua = moon in portuguese….

hope that helps a little.
