How difficult would it be for a 13 year old to learn Spanish?

I’ve started the 7th grade this year. I’m interested in learning Spanish, and teaching myself. How hard, in your opinion, do you believe it will be to learn? Also, what would be some good things to use, if I wanted to learn?

I taught it to myself and jumped into Spanish class when I was supposed to be behind everyone else by two years! If you are good at learning languages and understanding grammar you can do it.
You should use the internet, keep notes about grammar in a journal, conjugations and things like that. Watching cartoons in Spanish is good too. Get a Spanish dictionary and as you learn more Spanish, begin to read in it. Speak it as much as you can, but make sure your pronunciation is right or you might make a bad habit that will be hard to break. Remember that the vowel sounds in Spanish are always the same, there are never long or short vowels. If you haven’t taken a language before you should start with basic phrases, I took Latin before Spanish so I understood a little.

Have fun!!! I’m teaching myself Russian now!

I want to learn Spanish, but I don’t live close enough to a place where I can take a course. So I need to learn it by myself. If possible with some interactive software. Any advice?

And which Spanish should I learn? I heard the Spanish from Spain differs from the one in Mexico and the one in Mexico is different from the Spanish in South America.

Why would anyone encourage their children to learn Spanish in high school?

Same with French? Why are these the main languages taught in schools???
Why not encourage them to learn a language that will add value to their future…like Chinese? Give them a great advantage and teach them a language of business. It will make them extremely valuable in 20 years from now. What important business person only speaks Spanish or French? I see no value in it.
Why not make kids more competitive and give them a tool to aid their future? WTF is wrong with the schools today?

Spanish is one of the top most spoken languages in the world (either second or third). It’s also pretty easy to learn, a lot more so than english or chinese, thats for sure.

French is mainly taught in english schools because its close, and it’s pretty easy as well.

Languages is a skill saught for in many jobs, and it shows that you have good communication skills.

I’d like to learn some basic Spanish. Can anyone link me to a free crash course online?

About 2-3 weeks ago I started working at a McDonald’s where the majority of my coworkers speak Spanish as a first language. I get along great with them, and I’m trying to learn the language with their help. I’ve picked up several new words and phrases by listening and asking questions, but I’d really like to have real conversations with them.
Can anyone suggest a site or something that offers a free introductory course of good quality? I can’t afford to get lots of books and lessons. There are probably plenty of courses out there, but I wouldn’t know where to begin to look. Can you suggest a course that you perhaps have used in the past, or know someone that has had a good experience with one?
Thank you in advance!

learnspanish.com: The grammar lessons are explained very well, but there aren’t very many practice exercises, so after studying a grammar lesson you can find more elsewhere on the internet by googling "spanish present progressive" or whatever grammar subject you’re looking for.

These have really helped me improve my listening comprehension. It’s an educational telenovela series, very 90s, but keeps your attention enough to help you learn a lot. A good way of applying grammar lessons you’ve already learned.

I also like livemocha. The lessons are slow but you can write small writing exercises and record yourself speaking the language and have native speakers correct your grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc.

How long would it take someone to learn Spanish?

I’m not living in a Spanish speaking country, no one around me speaks it, All I have is my music (Wisin y Yandel), my movies (Spanish subtitles & Speaking), A Spanish/English dictionary, a couple of Spanish speaking audio tapes, a spanish book & the desire to learn a new language.

Is there any tricks or tips that can help me?

You can learn to start speaking fairly quickly, especially with a system like Tell Me More, here’s their website: www.tellmemorestore.com, you should be able to start speaking a whole level better in just 50 hours, so, like, two or three weeks. It’s got interactive video and is pretty cool and a lot of fun, so you learn quickly. I definitely recommend.
